Parenthood Mental Health
Parenthood can be a time of profound emotional transition, and perinatal mental health recognizes that mental health challenges can affect any parent — including mothers, fathers, adoptive parents, and caregivers — from pregnancy through the first years after a child joins the family. During this period, individuals may experience shifts in mood, identity, relationships, sleep, and daily functioning as they adjust to new roles and responsibilities. While many parents feel joy and connection, others may experience anxiety, depression, irritability, grief, or feelings of overwhelm. Perinatal mental health emphasizes early awareness, compassionate support, and access to appropriate care to promote the wellbeing of both parents and children, recognizing that healthy caregivers are foundational to healthy family systems.
